About this set

This set works its way out from the shore. The tidepool page has a starfish, a hermit crab and two mussels in large simple shapes; the coral reef page puts branching and brain corals, angelfish and a starfish into one dense scene; then the water gets deeper — a green sea turtle gliding over the reef, a clownfish tucked into a sea anemone, a seahorse with its tail curled around seagrass, an octopus on the sea floor among shells. Out in open water there are three moon jellyfish drifting at different depths, a great white shark trailed by a school of small fish, two bottlenose dolphins mid-leap, and a humpback whale breaching with the spray still coming off it. A sea otter floating in kelp with a shell on its chest and an emperor penguin standing with its chick round out the twelve.

Each animal is drawn with accurate proportions and the markings that identify it, so a clownfish reads as a clownfish and a humpback keeps its long pectoral fins and knobbled head. Outlines are bold on the animal and lighter on water, kelp and coral, which gives the page depth without any gray. Every region is closed, there is no shading or hatching anywhere, and the pages print cleanly on a home printer. Sea animals suit colored pencil especially well, since blues and greens can be layered for water without the page turning muddy.

Detail is pitched at adults and older children. If you are printing for younger kids, start with the tidepool, the penguin and the sea otter — those have the largest, simplest shapes. The coral reef, the jellyfish and the octopus have the most intricate line work and take the longest to finish. Every page is a 3:4 portrait at 768 by 1024 pixels; download them one at a time as PNG or take the whole set as a single print-ready PDF with a cover.

These pages are free for personal, classroom and library use, which makes the reef and tidepool pages useful as marine-biology handouts alongside a lesson. If you have your own photo — from an aquarium trip, a beach holiday, or of the child who spent the whole day in a rock pool — upload it and LineArt draws a five-page book with the same subject in every scene.
